Random Thoughts From A Server 47

Restaurant Humor

So there is actually a funny story behind this napkin.  The guest wanted a lobster tail for dinner.  We offer lobster tails as an add-on, but not as a separate meal.  I asked her if she would like to add the sides and salad to her meal and she approved.  When she got the bill she was shocked to find that two side and a salad were seven dollars extra.  In reality to order them separately would have run about twelve dollars, but I found a way to save her some money.

After a prolonged period of staring at the bill, I approached the table.  Before I could say a word I was greeted with a scornful, “we would like to speak to your manager.”  I was take aback by this because up until this point I felt I had established a pretty good rapport with the guests.  The owner of the restaurant went to the table and asked what the issue was.  She explained that she thought the lobster tail in the “sides” section would come with side (even though it was less than most of the entrees on the menu).  The owner explained that this was not the case.

She continued to fight him and in a moment that made me fight back an audible cheer he responded, “Would you assume the $3 sauce that is next to it includes all the side items as well?”  A perfectly logical response, to a very illogical argument.  I did not get a tip.  I quite frankly did not care because I knew I worked for an owner who was willing to stand up to irrational guests.

A quick note: you will start seeing more of this series as well as some new features coming to Restaurant Laughs.  The focus is turning to shorter and more frequent visual posts.  To stay up to date on all of them, check out the new Restaurant Laughs Facebook Page
